About Us Adoption Center How Can I Help Resources

Why should you choose to adopt a dog from Underdog ResQ out of the many animal shelters and rescue organizations in the area? First of all, we have great dogs! Second of all, we promise to try our best to make this an enjoyable process. All applications will be responded to promptly, (within 48 hours). Last but not least, adopting a dog that has been in a foster home allows us to tell you more about them. We are able to see how your new dog will adjust to being in a home environment, whether they are truly housebroken, how they respond to commands, where they like to sleep, their eating habits, their favorite toys, whether or not he is good with strangers that come to the home and much more.

Below are pictures and profiles of our available dogs for adoption. We will do our best to keep this page updated. The dogs that are adopted will graduate and be moved to the success stories page.

Please make sure to read the adoption standards before applying for a dog. Complete that adoption application online or print out the pdf application and mail it.

Name:  Tuzik
Breed:  Lhasa Apso
Age:  1 year
Sex:  Male

Tuzik's Story
Tuzik is about 1 yr old. This Lhasa Apso (may be a mixed dog) was found completely matted as a stray in the metro Boston area. He’s had a makeover and now lives with his foster family (2 adults and a cat). He is playful, loves soft toys & loves playing with other dogs! He is very sweet. Tuzik Knows sit well and is completely housetrained. He doesn’t really like to be held much but being so matted tells us that he’s probably not used to the attention. He does love to follow people around the house though and may end up liking being a lap dog when he gets used to the idea. Tuzik is a very playful, energetic young dog. He has a very good temperament. He can go to a home with another dog (he loves big and small dogs) and kids over the age of 12. Although he currently lives with a cat, he can be very protective of his food around her. We expect he will do the same in a home with a dog so he’ll have to be fed separately if he goes to a home with other animals.

To adopt or meet Tuzik, please complete an adoption application on www.underdogresq.org today! He is being fostered west of Boston.

Name:  Mickey
Breed:  Pekingese
Age:  coming soon
Sex:  Male

Mickey's Story
Mickey is a loveable 12 lb. Pekingese mix. He was a stray found north of Boston before being admitted by Underdog ResQ. He has just been neutered and the doctors think he is around 4 years old. He must have had a good home because he is totally housebroken, is not demanding and does not climb on the furniture. His appetite is very good. He loves walks and the outdoors. He enjoys being around people. The only time he barks is when we put him in the crate when we go to work or at bedtime. But, we’re working on that. We are encouraged that each night he fusses less before settling in his crate. Overall, he is well behaved, even tempered and very easy to care for.

He is so mellow that we think he would be a great match for any family. Of course, kids should be gentle with this little guy. He also gets along great with other dogs. He didn't express any interest in a cat he was tested with during his temperament evaluation.

To meet and potentially adopt Mickey, please complete our adoption application on www.underdogresq.org.

Name:  Dexter
Breed:  Shepherd Mix
Age:  2-3 years
Sex:  Male

Dexter's Story
This adorable boy was admitted from one of NYC’s crowded municipal shelters. Volunteers were drawn to him because of his innocent and gentle demeanor, size and personality. Dexter is estimated to be around 2-3 years old and weighs about 40 pounds.

He's funny and affectionate, respectful of his foster family’s space and their things, listens and responds, and for the most part, wants to please and listens well. Dexter is housebroken. He is learning to sit and lay down and does really well with the "wait" command. His favorite thing is to step up on you gently for a hug. He is adapting very well to the flow and routine of his foster family life.

During the day he is completely content. He seeks his people out and loves to just hang out no matter what they are doing. He loves walks...great on the leash...loves t o ride in the car. And, he waits patiently in the car when his people run some errands. He’s confident most of the time until he’s left alone in his crate. This is where he starts to demonstrate the consequences of shelter life and being abandoned or lost by his family. He is improving daily and his foster parents will try to keep him for at long possible until he can find a permanent family.

His ideal home will have patient family, preferably experienced dog owners familiar with separation anxiety. Ideally, he will have a stay at home mom or a family willing to make a commitment to constantly desensitize him to being alone. His new family will also have older kids, if any, only because he is a bit shy at first. He needs a little more time to adjust that some dogs but you should know that this is a common trait of shelter dogs. We don’t know what he’s been through. We can’t make assumptions other than this poor little guy has been traumatized by the loss of his family. This should illustrate how affectionate and loving he can be.

He has done very well with the dogs he has met here. He is neith er nervous nor forward with them. Having another dog around in the house may help decrease his loneliness and help cure his anxiety. He has become quite close with the cat in the home too. He "pets" her back with his nose and often gets down into posi tion trying to get her to play.

If you'd like to learn more about this adorable little guy and perhaps adopt him, please complete our adoption application on www.underdogresq.org.

Please come back later for more photos. These photos were taken when he was in the shelter. He was dirty and stinky then but still adorable!

Name:  Brando
Breed:  Miniature Pinscher
Age:  9-12 months
Sex:  Male

Brando's Story
“I'm gonna make you an offer you can't refuse…” I’ll set you up the sweetest, silliest puppy you could ever dream of…me! My name is Brando and I am indeed the original rebel without a cause. OK, OK, I’m not that big of a rebel, I’m more of a mischievous puppy, but I’m still a force to be reckoned with.
My age is uncertain (as is my past) but my foster parents are pretty sure that I am still quite young. I am curious about everything around me and I am still a little clumsy on my feet. Oh, and I do like to put everything in my mouth — who knows, it might taste good! Despite my limited life experience, I am very intelligent and a quick study. It is obvious that I know the appropriate place to potty. Generally, I will give a few barks to let you know that nature is calling. However, I am still very young and you need to keep an eye on me and pick up on my signals — I am a baby, after all.
I was a little timid when I first came to my foster home. I had some accidents (as puppies tend to do) but I would immediately cower and run to hide beneath something. I was also hesitant to be affectionate. It is pretty clear that someone in my past treated me quite harshly. My foster parents were scared that I would never learn to trust people or be able to be comfortable in a new environment. Luckily, I soon made a big turnaround I soon came into my own. I let my irresistible personality shine through.

I have a lot of energy (don’t all of us Hollywood types?), so I need a family that is willing to run and play with me. Additionally, as I am still learning the difference between right and wrong, I will need an owner who is willing to be both stern and patient with me.

Even though I am a self-proclaimed tough guy, I wasn’t blessed with the most intimidating of physiques. For this reason, it is probably not a good idea that I go to a home with extremely young children. Overall, I weigh in at around 12 pounds so a rambunctious child that is not used to small pets could easily injure me.

These days I can’t get enough rubs or snuggles and I let the kisses flow like tap water. I love all people and dogs and I would be a great addition to an active family that does not spend that much time away from home (I get a little anxious when I am left alone for prolonged periods of time). I would be the most content in an environment where I can be social and my need for attention can be fulfilled. Speaking of attention, I probably pay a little too much attention to cats — if you know what I mean. I would never hurt one, of course, but that does not mean that I won’t chase them while barking mercilessly.

In a nutshell, I am a goofy, charismatic pooch. And, despite my size, I have a heart bigger than an elephant’s. I would love to meet you and steal your heart away. After all, who could resist this heartthrob?

Name:  Leon
Breed:  Pit Bull
Age:  1- 1 1/2 years
Sex:  Male

Leon's Story
Poor me! I was found as a stray wandering the streets, but I've been rescued now and am ready to find my forever home with you. Let me tell you a bit about myself...
I am a 50 lb, lean, black and brown brindle pit bull with the sweetest brown eyes you've ever seen. No one knows when my birthday is, but I'm about 1 to 1 ½ years old. I am very eager to be by your side at all times, but I am working on crate training for when my family needs to leave me alone. The crate can be a little daunting because it reminds me of when I had no home and stayed at the shelter. From day one in my foster home I was ready to learn my commands and, I might add, I'm becoming quite the expert. I know to sit, lay down, and give my paw. I am very responsive to my name and will come when you whistle or call for me. I'm learning to walk on a leash with my Gentle Leader and hardly ever pull, even if I see another dog. I am a perfect gentleman when it comes to other animals - I currently live with 3 cats! I sniff them and if they let me, I might lick their face and then happily trot away.

My favorite things to do are to go for walks, go on car rides, chew on a bone, and be with my people. I will do whatever you love to do as long as I can be by your side. I love napping and snuggling and everyone who has met me wishes they could adopt me. I am currently fostered in a busy household of 7 people and 3 cats and I get to meet new people every day. I get excited when I am out for walks, but remain very calm when I am I indoors. Would it be bragging if I were to say that I'm the perfect dog?

 Common misconceptions
 before adopting a dog:
1. We’re getting Rex for the kids - they will do all the work.

Maybe for the first week or so, but most kids will slack off soon enough and the responsibility will fall on your laps. You are considered to be the owner because you are over the age of 21. If your kids do not walk Rex, then it is up to you that it gets done. As much as we talk to our kids about responsibility and as much as they agree to care for your new dog, we all know that sooner or later most kids will lose interest or get tired.

If you can positively answer these questions and concerns, then you may be ready to adopt Rex.
